Merry Christmas
This image has:
  • 384 x 56 pixel
  • 215 colors
  • 7.2 bytes size

You will need:
Fonts:
  • Africaans SF (size = 16); any other "fat" font will do, like: Copperfield (s = 16); Arial black (s = 16); Aarvark (s = 18); HomewardBound (s =18), etc...
  • Wingdings (comes with Windows copy)
  • Animals ( download free)
  • CarrDingbats2 (download free)
Filter Factory - Gallery B (download free)

This image differs a little from the one shown at the end of the Christmas Image 1 tutorial, as you can download all its parts as freeware. When you download the fonts copy them (after unziping) to the same directory where your other true type fonts (* .ttf ) are. Since all components are on the same layer, this time it'll be even easier to create further images using them, as you will learn at the end of this tutorial.

Never deselect before I tell you ! (I'll not forget)
A . TEXT
1. Set background black and foreground white - FILE - NEW - width = 450; heigth = 70;
image 1
background color = black; image type 16.7 million colors. Click on the text tool button, than on your image (from now on = call text). Set antialias; font Africaans; size = 16; bold, floating; type MERRY CHRISTMAS leaving 2 spaces between the words. OK. The white selected text appears on your black background.
Place it in the center of your image (see sample).
2. Go to Image - Special effects - cutout - uncheck "fill interior color" (always); interior color = background; shadow image 2
color = green; opacity = 180; blur = 3; offset = 2 / 2. OK.Repeat the same with shadow color = blue; offset = -2/ -2.
3. Go to Colors - Adjust - Brightness = 20; Contrast = 0
4. Image - special effects - hot wax coating
5. Again: colors - adjust - Brightness = 70; Contrast = 20 (the fatter the font, the heigther the values - test with preview)
6. Colors - Colorize - hue = 0; saturation = 255.
7. Image - normal filter - sharpen - 2 times. DESELECT
8. Image - plug in filters Filter factory B - Fluttering Flag
Below are the control values used in this sample. As the
image 3
text was centered by hand, and specially if you are using a different font, small corrections may be necessary. Observe the effect after entering the figures before pressing OK. Should you not be content with the result, even after entering OK , go to edit - undo and try again. The last control (shading amount) should always
be = 0.
Control 1 = 220; control 2 = 255; control 3 = 159; control 4 = 102; control 5 = 146; control 6 = 0.
B. DEER
1. Call text - set: Animals; antialias; regular; size = 48; type "i" (without quotes).
image 4
Note: there are other animal fonts, containing different deers associated to different characters; the method here refers to the font indicated above. A white selected deer appears on your image. Place it properly (see sample) .
2. Image - special effects - cutout - interior color = background; shadow = blue; opacity =110; blur = 10; offset = 1 /1. image 5
Repeat the same with interior color = foreground; shadow = green; offset = -1/-1.
3. Colors - Colorize - hue = 24; saturation = 255.
4. Image - normal filter - Sharpen 2 times.
5.Edit - copy
DESELECT
6. Edit - paste - as a new selection. Now you have the second deer. Place it at the end of the text.
7. Text button remaining pressed all the time , go to Image - mirror - correct position
DESELECT
C. STAR
1. Image - plug in filters - Filter Factory B - Starmaker.
The values of the controls were: 87, 167, 10, 12, 55,
image 6
44, 131 and 121.  Remember that as the text was placed by hand, controls X and Y will probably need some manual adjusting.
D. BLUE ICE CRYSTAL
1. Call text - Wingdings; antialias; regular; size = 22 ; floating; type T
image 7
2. Place it over Christmas
3. Cutout - background color - shadow = blue; opacity = 180; blur = 0; offset 1/ 1.
Repeat with foreground color; offset -1/ -1.
4. Colors - brightness = 40; contrast = 0
5. Colorize - hue = 108; saturation = 255.
6. Normal filters - sharpen 2 times. DESELECT

E. GREEN ORNAMENT
1. Call text - CarrDingbats 2; antialias; regular; size = 16; floating; type J
2. Adjust position (see sample)
3. Cutout - background color - shadow = green; opacity = 200; blur = 5; offset 1/ 1.
Repeat with foreground color; offset -1/ -1.
4. Image - special effects - hot wax coating.
5. Colors - brightness = 75; contrast = 0
6. Colorize - hue = 70; saturation = 255.
7. Normal filters - sharpen more - DESELECT
F. SMALL WHITE ICE CRYSTALS
1. Call text - Wingdings; antialias; regular; size = 16 ; floating; type T
image 8
2. Place over the deer
3. to improve visibility, go to Flood Fill - solid color - tolerance = 180 - apply (white)
4. Edit - Copy - DESELECT
5. Edit - paste - as a new selection - place over the second deer. DESELECT

G. SMALL STARS
1. Call text - CarrDingbats2; antialias; regular; size = 12; floating; type +
2. Place where you want it.
3. Cutout - background color - shadow = green; opacity = 120; blur = 0 ; offset 1/ 1.
Repeat with shadow = blue; offset -1/-1.
4. Hot wax coating - Colors - brigtness = 80; contrast = 0
5. EDIT - COPY
6. Colorize - hue = 186; saturation = 255 (lilac) - sharpen once - DESELECT
Further ones: Edit - paste - as a new selection - position - colorize (for golden: h = 186, ; for red: h = 0,
for blue h = 140, for blue-green = 120 - saturation always = 255) - sharpen once - DESELECT.
ready image
H. FILE SAVING
1.Make a rectangular selection - feather = 0 - as close as possible around your image
2. Edit - copy - edit - paste as a new image
3. Colors - decrease color depth - 256 colors - OK
4. Colors - count colors = 215 ( in my image, value can vary)
5. Colors - increase color depth again to 16 millions.
6. Colors - decrease color depth by X colors - type the number you have counted before (215 in my case) OK.
7. Save as something.gif

QUICK IMAGES USING THE SAME COMPONENTS:
To construct the 2 images above, all you have to do is: open a new file as you did at the begining; make rectangular selections around each component - begin with the text words (each at a time) - edit - copy - click on your new image - edit - paste - as a new selection - place where you want it - deselect. Using rectangular selection (the easiest one) it is unavoidable that some parts of the other components are selected too. To get rid of these, use Pen Tool - foreground black - size = 3 (or less) ; round; paper texture none.
Repeat file saving as above.
Image 4

sample 4
For this image open a new file as before, but 300 x 300 pixel size, to give you lots of working space.
Begin selecting MERRY as above and place it on the new image. Go to Image - rotate - 50 degrees right - sharpen 1 x to correct pixel distortion caused by rotation. Place where you want it - deselect.
Do the same with CHRISTMAS. Rotate the deer 5 degrees left - sharpen 1 x - deselect. As you place the components keep in mind that your final image will be a rectangular one and that smaller images will make smaller files. For the white dots (may be stars or snowflakes) use pen tool - foreground white - size one - round - paper texture none . Save as above.

And last , but not least I wish you all a

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY 1998
