The example images are cropped to save on bandwidth. (lbc)
1. Take a 16,7 M color picture, about 400 x 400 pixels, depending
on the size of the font you are going to use.. Take a black
background and a white foreground.
For everyone who likes to stick with the script, I used a 400 x 400 image..
2. Type a font with approx. 90 or 100 pixels. Make sure you have about 50 pixels space on every side of your image. I used "Matura MT Script Capitals" with "Bold Italic" on and 120 pixels in size.
3. Rotate the image ("Image | Rotate")
And rotate right with 90 degrees. We're going to work a lot
with wind deformations and these can only performed left or right.
4. Save your selection. Name it anything you like. This can be done by choosing "Selections | Save.."
5. Now release your selection.
6. Apply a motion blur ("Image | Deformations | Motion Blur")
Set to 90 degrees and 40 pixels strength. Wow! That's a lot of
motion ! Let's do it again, but with different values.
7. Another motion blur ("Image | Deformations | Motion Blur")
Set to 0 degrees and 10 pixels strength.
8. Apply a solarize ("Colors | Solarize")
Set threshold to 60. Ever used some of this ? It eliminates the
colors with the brightness which lies above the threshold-level,
and set them to black. Gives a neat effect!
9. Blur your image ("Image | Normal filters | Blur")
Take blur more. This makes the interior a bit more soft.
10. Add borders 10 pixels on the top, leave the rest to zero. Why do we do that? It's not because the image is too small or something. It shifts the image a bit, which creates a displaced pattern when we load the selection again.
11. Load your selection again.. You see ?? The selection is displaced.
Just leave it like this... It's all part of the plan! :-)
12. Apply a negative filter ("Colors | Negative Image")
To see what's your actual text, and give it a nice contrast
towards the rest of the image..
13. Now invert your selection. We're going to work on the outer
part of the text, and it should look something like a icy bottom.
But it's a long way before it looks like it... Let's carry on.
14. Apply a motion blur ("Image | Deformations | Motion Blur")
Set to 90 degrees and 40 pixels strength. What? Another motionblur ?
Just take it from me, it's a necressary one..
15. Apply a horizontal edge detect ("Image | Edge Filters | Find Horizontal Edges")
This is to create "something" which starts to look like an icicle.
But don't worry.. It looks as bad on yours as it looked on mine.. :)
16. Let's take a Highlight/Midtone/Shadow ("Colors | Adjust | Highlight/Midtone/Shadow")
Set highlight 40%, midtone 60% and shadow 0%. Let's pump up the brightness for
dark side effect the edge-detect had on our image.. We don't want
any dark spots to get bright, only the ones containing a non-zero
value. Therefore we take a H/M/S color-adjustment.
17. Apply a wind deformation ("Image | Deformations | Wind")
Set to wind from right with strength 20. Let's stretch those
edges we detected!
18. Do the erode filter TWICE.. ("Image | Special Filters | Erode")
This way we create some more solid isicle-like effect at the bottom,
and all glow at the bottom is erased.
19. Add 50% random noise ("Image | Special Filters | Add Noise")
I don't like these static things at the bottom, so I introduce
some irragularity, to make it a bit more life-like..
20. Apply the erode filter once more ("Image | Special Filters | Erode").
21. Apply Highlight/Midtone/Shadow ("Colors | Adjust | Highlight/Midtone/Shadow")
Set highlight 40%, midtone 60% and shadow 0%. Again to pump-up the
noise we added to the icicles.
22. Now apply the despeckle filter ("Image | Special Filters | Despeckle")
This it to remove all spots from the image. How neat! All spots
added to the isicles remain where they are, and the rest just
vanished! Cool!
23. Blur more image ("Image | Normal filters | Blur")
This way the irregularity mixes with the rest of the image and
all added spots get mixed with the rest of the spots.
24. Apply a horizontal edge detect ("Image | Edge Filters | Find Horizontal Edges")
again to create more life-like icicles.
25. Apply a wind deformation ("Image | Deformations | Wind")
Set to wind from right with strength 10. We sharpen those
ends of the image, making them a bit more nice.
26. Modify feather 5, or try 8.
This is to merge the text with the ice, so it won't look like
the ice is just glued at the bottom because all the other text
isn't affected.
27. Choose wind deformation again ("Image | Deformations | Wind")
Set to wind from right with strength 5... You'll guessed it!
The feather causes parts of the text to deform along with the
icy stuff..
28. Do the erode filter again ("Image | Special Filters | Erode")
29. Do Highlight/Midtone/Shadow ("Colors | Adjust | Highlight/Midtone/Shadow")
Set highlight 80%, midtone 60% and shadow 0%
30. Blur image ("Image | Normal filters | Blur")
31. Highlight/Midtone/Shadow applied ("Colors | Adjust | Highlight/Midtone/Shadow")
Set highlight 80%, midtone 60% and shadow 10%
Watch the shadow! It's 10% now.
33. Ok, colorize image ("Colors | Colorize")
Set hue to 150 and saturation to 255. This is BLUE and white.
A great color for an ICE-effect. If you like to have another
color, just play around...
34. Invert the selection. We are going to work on the interior now..
35. Sharpen image ("Image | Normal Filters | Sharpen")
Sharpen more taken..
37. Do the negative filter ("Colors | Negative Image")
38. Brighness/contrast applied ("Colors | Adjust | Brightness/Contrast")
Set to brightness 30 and contrast 6.. This is to make it a bit
more bright, so it catches the color we choose..
39. Colorize the interior ("Colors | Colorize")..
Set hue to 0 and saturation to 255. This is RED ! Ah well, you
could choose another color if you like, but this is what I've
chosen so far.. :)
40. One of the last steps, Release Selection!!
41. Rotate Image ("Image | Rotate") !!
Rotate it to the left with 90 degrees.
42. Add a sharpen if you like.
AND, DONE!
