Grained Effect

In order to get a woodgrain-effect, you need to make vertical random lines. This can be done with random noise, and the lines with a deformation wind effect. It's amazing how simple it's done...
type text 1. Create a 16,7M color image, with black background.

2. Select also BLACK as your foreground color, and type your text. You could use any font, but a nice solid font once again gives a better effect.

random noise/highlight 3. Now you only see your selection, without any interior.. Select Image|Special Filters|Add Noise|Random (20%) while selection is still active.

4. Now it's necressary to make the pixels as bright as possible. You can light them up with Colors|Adjust|Highlight/Midtone/Shadow and choose 60% for highlight, 40% for midtone and 00% for shadow. This will only effect the pixels, and will leave all black (non-pixels) not effected.

wind 5. Do a wind deformation with Image|Deformations|Wind and choose a direction. It doesn't matter wich side. Take pixelstrength 2.

6. Now our image is too dark. Enhance all pixels again, with Color|Adjust|Highlight/Midtone/Shadow and use the same parameters as defined in 4.

7. Now do a wind deformation again, but use wind with strength 6 this time.

8. Do action described in 6 again.

cutout

9. Apply a cutout. Remember, it's important to do the LIGHT side first, and after that the DARK SIDE. If you do it the other way around, the light side becomes too dominant and produces to much sharp edges.

So, choose Image|Special Effects|Cutout, and Disable the interior fill. Take Opacity = 140 and Blur = 10. When you have very small lines, it's wise to lower the Blur and cutout size, so they don't overlap. First the light side.. Enter Horizontal = 5 and Vertical = 5, and choose Shadow color = "white" and apply it. After that, the dark side. Enter Horizontal = -5 and Vertical = -5. Choose Shadowcolor = "black" and apply it. Wow! What a lot of text for such a simple action!! :)

finish 10. Almost done now.. Choose Colors|Colorize and choose a color you like. Some basic colors are red (Hue=0 Sat=240) or blue (Hue=150 Sat=240)

(Note: I used hue=7, sat=110. lbc)

11. Now release the selection, and do one last sharp-action. by selecting Image|Normal Filters|Sharpen, and DONE!!
